Ways to get connected
Saturday Serve - Food Pantry Glow Up for West Valley Community Services
We have an awesome weekend opportunity to serve one of our favorite local non-profit community partners from 10am-12noon. So come one and come all for a quick but helpful service project!
Details
West Valley Community Services wants to unite the community to fight hunger and homelessness, and they envision a community where every person has food on the table and a roof over their head. Clients shop the food pantry during the week, so the weekend is the best time to give it a deep clean!
We will be sweeping, wiping, scrubbing, vacuuming, and mopping: floors, shelves, fridges, freezers, carts, milk crates, and more. If we can clean it and make it shine, we will!
What to expect:
Meeting new people and/or getting to know them better while you serve alongside each other
How to prepare:
Wear clothes you don't mind possibly getting grubby
Bring layers in case you get cold easily and/or volunteer to clean out any of the freezers/refrigerator sections
Latex gloves are provided, but if you have your own favorite pair of work gloves, bring those. Sometimes people like to wear a mask too—we use food-safe disinfectant spray, but it can be nice to not stick your face in what you just spritzed! Mask and gloves are both optional though.
Bring a water bottle
We will meet at WVCS, located at 10104 Vista Dr, Cupertino, CA 95014
Park on the street—parking is free, but you might want to give yourself a couple extra minutes to walk from the car

Coworking at The Neighborhood
More than just being a place to get work done, the Neighborhood is about the people you can meet and the friends you can make when you show up to the same place together week after week, with the intention of getting to know others. We’re open from 1-5pm most Mondays and Fridays, and we’d love for you to come by!
More about The Neighborhood: Cupertino’s Coworking Collective
We love the flexibility of working from home, but we know how isolating and lonely that can be.
Come join a welcoming indoor/outdoor co-working space that has a relaxed coffee shop vibe but with more of a community feel, a place where you’re known and can greet each other by name. Think of this as a space where you can come and focus on work, but also have as a launch pad to make new friends that you can get to know after work too.
And by the way, the Neighborhood is one of the ways we serve, love, and get to know our neighbors, so it’s free. Free is pretty rare around these parts, so we thought you might want to know!
We have WiFi, snacks, seltzers, and charging ports a plenty, and will brew you a fresh pot of coffee if you feel like getting caffeinated. So why work from home when you can work from here?

Resurrecting Hope - Easter worship service & outdoor community meal
How do we hold onto hope in the midst of hard times, pain, brokenness, and injustice—both in our own lives, and in the world around us?
What would it mean to you to know that hope is also holding onto us?
This Easter Sunday, come hear about the hope that is found in the person of Jesus. Even in the places that seem the most hopeless, his empty tomb reminds us that even death doesn’t have to have the last word because Jesus is making all things new.
This worship service will include liturgical elements like prayers, creeds, a sermon, and communion. Don’t know what any of that means? Not to worry—we like to explain the historic elements in our service as we go, because in times when so much is changing, these ancient practices can help root and ground us, and connect us to others across time and space.
Our worship service will be followed by a community meal outdoors in the courtyard, and we’ll be hosting the Zaida’s Kitchen food truck! Zaida’s Kitchen serves authentic Mexican Oaxacan cuisine, is 100% gluten-free, and makes from-scratch non-GMO corn tortillas. Yum!
Reach out to us with any questions you have at hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org. Going anywhere for the first time can be really challenging. Going to a church for the first time can be especially intimidating. We’d love to help make it easier.
Becoming WVNC - Launch Team Interest Meeting
Come hear from the co-founders of West Valley Neighborhood Church, Caitlin & Joel, about the vision for this new church in the heart of Silicon Valley—including how you can be a part of building this community from the ground up!
After hearing about the vision and values of the church, and getting to ask any questions you might have, you’re invited to stay for the launch of our new series, Life Shared, from 4:15pm-5:45pm, followed by a community meal.
Whether you plan to stay for study/dinner or if you’d rather just come to the interest meeting, please RSVP to hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org let us know that you’re coming (and if applicable, if you have any food restrictions for us to accommodate). We’d love to get to know you better, and as you’ll hear, we’re big believers in the bonding that happens around a table or over a meal! Thank you in advance for your RSVP, because knowing our numbers will help us plan not only the set up of the room, but also the way we structure the conversation.
We hope to see you there!
(Open Air) Open Mic - Indoor Edition
(INDOOR EDITION): After hibernating for the winter, our Open Mic (indoor edition) is back to bring together a supportive community of those who love music, the spoken word, clean(!) comedy, and creative arts.
This is a time when imperfect people can come together and encourage one another to step out and share something new, to be vulnerable enough to be ourselves, to take a risk, and discover we are appreciated just as we are. Whether you have something you want to share or if you want to cheer on others who do, we want you here!
We’ll be back outside in the open air when the weather and sunlight allows.
Read on for what to expect if you’re coming to support a performer, and below that, what to expect if you’re performing.
The headline is: let's have fun meeting new people and supporting the local creative arts scene. Please keep in mind that this is designed to be a safe space for all people, whatever background we are from or whatever beliefs we have. If you have questions about content, let us know. We're happy to help clarify.
I'm coming to cheer on the performers! What do I need to know?
The "coverage charge" is to bring some canned goods for West Valley Community Services. Check out what they need the most
I'm coming to perform! What do I need to know?
Slots are 5-10 minutes, depending on how many performers we have. Time slot includes your set-up time
Sign up with this form ahead of time to get a slot, or come at 6:45pm the night-of! (Sorry! We can’t guarantee people who come later will get a slot)
Bring your instrument (unless you’re playing keys—we’ll provide a house keyboard: a Roland Juno-DS 88)
If you're a vocalist that wants live accompaniment, head over here and let us know what song you want to do. The more notice you give us, the better chances are we can accompany you live. Tracks are okay too, but live is fun, right?
We’ll have two mics, a 1/4 inch connection for your instrument, and two music stands
Keep it family-friendly! If PG-10 were a rating, that’s what we’d be going for

Can't wait to see (and hear!) you there!

Worship Service & Community Meal - Jesus in His Own Words Series
We are going through a weekly series called Jesus in His Own Words. Each week, we investigate a key identity statement Jesus made about himself, and what that means for us. Whether you are simply curious about Jesus or you long to know him more deeply, investigating and reflecting upon what Jesus told his listeners about who he is a great place to start. These statements are recorded by the disciple, John, and are known as the I AM statements of Jesus.
TWO FORMATS, ONE THEME
WORSHIP SERVICE & COMMUNITY MEAL
On Sunday January 11, Sunday February 1, and Sunday March 1, we will meet at 4:15pm in the sanctuary for gathered worship; these worship services will incorporate liturgical elements like prayers, creeds, a sermon, and communion. And since we love to spend time together, like our usual monthly services, we’ll still come together afterward for a community meal.
DISCUSSION GROUP & COMMUNITY MEAL
On the other Sundays* (January 18, 25; February 15, 22, 29), we will be meeting at 4:15pm across the courtyard in McHattie Hall for a more casual, interactive discussion. We’ll still sing worship songs to God to open our time, and then we’ll dig into the Bible passage for the day. No prior background knowledge is needed, and if you need a Bible, let us know—we’d love to give you one! And if you prefer to listen rather than talk, don’t worry—you won’t have to share anything unless you want to.
Since this space we’re meeting in is smaller, and we’ll be ordering dinner based on the number of people who are coming, we appreciate your RSVP to hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org. Let us know if you have any food restrictions or allergies that we can accommodate!
(On February 8th, we’ll move our group to 10:30am, since Levi Stadium is hosting the Super Bowl!)
WHICH FORMAT IS FOR ME?
Our hope is that people can follow along on the whole eight-week journey, joining both formats for a more well-rounded and holistic learning experience, as well as cultivate deeper community and connections through more consistent presence. We aim to make both the worship service and the discussion group format accessible to people from any background.
But the best way to know for sure is to come to the first one of each format, on January 11 and January 18.
And as always, you can drop us a line at hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org with any specific questions you have about what to expect—we’d love to fill in any details.

Yes, We Can! Food Pantry Service Project
Looking for a way to connect with others and give back? Let's serve West Valley Community Services together for a quick but high impact service project.
Because of winter food drives, WVCS has such a high volume of food pantry donations right now that they have to rent storage pods to contain them all before they are sorted. What we do is make sure that goods that are WAY past the expiration date do not pass go, and we also help them categorize by type to make it easier to stock their shelves. It's amazing how many cans we can process together as a group!
This is a great opportunity for us to get to roll up our sleeves and serve our community, while we also get to know our neighbors. Note that we’re meeting at West Valley Community Services, not on the church campus!
Drop us a line if you’re planning on coming so this local community org can right-size the project for our group size: hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org

More than just being a place to get work done, the Neighborhood is about the people you can meet and the friends you can make when you show up to the same place together week after week, with the intention of getting to know others. We’re open from 1-5pm most Mondays and Fridays, and we’d love for you to come by!

And since we love to spend time together, like our usual monthly services, we’ll still come together afterward for a community meal.
new this month! we’re debuting WVNC LITTLES
For sanctuary Sundays, we’ll have the option for kids 0-4 years old to join our WVNC Littles ministry. Drop off starts at 4pm before the 4:15pm service; pick up will be after the service concludes, and kids will join us for the community meal.
Registration not required but appreciated to hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org; please include the name(s) and age(s) of the kids who will be joining, and plan to bring a diaper bag. We will have two loving background-checked and trained kids’ ministry leads with the kids at all times to ensure their safety.

Weekly Dinner Discussion Group on Life & Faith
Alpha is designed for anyone who is looking to make friends over a meal with meaningful conversation, and is open to and interested in hearing a variety of perspectives on life and faith.
On Thursday January 22nd from 6:15-8:15pm we’re hosting another opportunity where you can both literally and figuratively get a taste of what this experience will be like.
Drop us a line at hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org to RSVP, so we know how many to cook for. Please let us know if you have any food allergies or restrictions and we can make sure you’re covered!
This is the first week of the Alpha experience (after the preview night we had last week), but it’s the best week to jump in! We’ll eat a great meal, watch a short film produced by the Alpha Course, and we’ll probably tell a joke or do an ice breaker before getting into the conversation! Since the video each week looks at different elements of the Christian faith, and includes street interviews with people from diverse backgrounds on their perspectives on that week’s theme, participants will have the chance to share our own reactions, perceptions, perspectives, faith/non-faith backgrounds and stories. The more diverse our perspectives, the more interesting the discussion, and the more we can learn from one another.
Please note that while the course is structured to dialogue with major tenets of the Christian faith, this is a beautifully pressure-free safe space for people of all backgrounds and beliefs. While some people who identify as Christian might participate, this is definitely not a "Christian group"—it's meant for people of any background who have questions or are curious.
Expect to bond over the course of the winter as we share stories and experiences. There will also be an optional retreat the weekend of February 21-22 if you’re looking for a change of pace and a chance to deepen friendships.
Alpha is run all around the world, and we love the way it brings people together and creates community!
What can you expect on a typical Alpha night?
Starting with amazing food (Joel’s a PHENOMENAL cook and adept with handling food allergies, so don’t let that hold you back)
A joke and/or an icebreaker
Watching a short film that raises a different question each week. This week’s question is “Who is Jesus?” (according to the Christian faith). He is one of the most well-known historical figures in the world. This episode discusses “Who is Jesus?” and any evidence for his existence. Was Jesus fully human or divine? Was he more than a man, a great human and a religious teacher?
Good, honest conversation, responding to the video with our perspectives, feeling free to share our questions, objections, and diverse experiences, in a safe listening community where we value each other's differences and are open to connecting with others.
Bonding with other participants from different backgrounds, especially if you decide to join the full series. (There's something about coming together over a meal every week and having meaningful conversations that creates friendships faster than we normally do in our adult lives, and more like we might have experienced in college.)
Ending on time. Though you're welcome to linger and chat, we'll have a clear finish by 8:15pm so that you can also head home and get some rest and don't have to feel awkward trying to slip out

More about WVCS:
West Valley Community Services, Inc. is a community-based non-profit agency, founded in 1973. West Valley Community Services serves low-income and unhoused individuals and families in the West Valley communities of Cupertino, Saratoga, West San Jose, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, and the surrounding mountain regions. WVCS provides a continuum of basic needs for the population it serves, which includes an in-house WVCS Market, mobile Park-It Market, supportive services for the unhoused, emergency financial assistance, case management, community access to resources and education, special programs like the Back-to-School supplies and holiday program to support families.
Drop us a line if you’re planning on coming so this local community org can right-size the project for our group size: hello@wvneighborhoodchurch.org

Free Community Yoga Flow & Round Two Coffee Open House
If you’re ready to start your new year with connection, movement, and caffeine(!), want to try more fun and free activities and/or explore new spaces, come to our community open house on Saturday January 10th. We’ll be kicking off the morning with a gentle stretch class at 9:30am taught by Yoga6 in an accessible, non-denominational way—whatever your background, whatever you believe, you’ll be welcome! We’ll be focusing on getting our bodies moving after the holiday season and in the depth of winter. Feel free to come as early as 9:15am to find McHattie Hall (it’s the building with the second tallest roof on campus, and has a gym in the middle, so you can’t miss us) and get your mat set up.
After class gets out at 10:30am, we’re super excited to also get to host Round Two Coffee; their amazing specialty drinks will be on us. We’ll open up the doors to three of our gathering spaces on campus: our free coworking space (open most Monday & Friday afternoons from 1-5pm); a living room-esque lounge space with cozy coffee shop vibes (where we host our Open Air Open Mics during the indoor season); and for those who are interested in architecture and/or sacred spaces, our mid-century sanctuary with vaulted redwood ceilings and stained glass). Think of this time as a community mixer, where everyone is invited to stay, hang out, connect with someone new, work on a puzzle, read a book, or whatever floats your morning boat!
We know that it’s hard to find places to gather and meet new people in the South Bay, and especially in Cupertino, so we like to use our space to serve community in this way. We’d love to get to meet you!
Feel free to come for one or both (just yoga; just coffee & the open house)—or all of the above. We’re excited to get to collaborate with two local businesses, Yoga6 and Round Two Coffee. If it turns out there is enough community interest, we’ll be able to bring this back!
